New England Patriots & New York Giants are in the Super Bowl!

by Administrator 28. January 2012 04:41

What a crazy week we had here at DoggieNation and we love this time of year - Super Bowl!  We are super excited the Patriots and Giants are playing this big game, both are such great teams and have great fans....especially all the furry fans!

Our dogs Sophia and Lilly have been great models this week, helping us show off both teams to our Facebook fans and we are having a blast with them!  Lilly is only a year old, so she is a little more on the difficult side getting her to stay still.  She loves to wiggle around in the jersey and not stay still long.  Sophia is a little more well behaved, sits still and lets us take photos.  She is a more "seasoned" model.

We hope everyone is having as much fun with their dogs as we are.  We really love our jobs here at DoggieNation and thank all our loyal customers for your orders and support.

Enjoy!

What a weekend of Football!!

by Administrator 16. January 2012 22:55

Wow!  NFL games this weekend was great.  What a game between San Fransisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints!  It came down to the last few minutes of the game but the 49ers WON!  It was exciting for sure.  All our San Francisco fans must be very happy this week.

The Patriots and Broncos game was good, but not as exciting.  The Patriots definetely won that one by a long shot.

The Texans and Ravens game was exciting and the Ravens won!  Then finally the Packers and NY Giants played their game.  We are Packers fans here from last year's win and were saddened that they lost.  But we are happy for all our NY Giants fans out there!

We hope you and your pups had as much fun watching the games as we did.  As always, post your photos to our Facebook page as we love to see all our customers!

Winter Holiday Hazards For Pets

by Administrator 14. December 2011 04:22

DoggieNation wants to share some important tips for keeping your pets safe during the holiday season.  Many things that we all consume, use or decorate with during these holiday months are not safe for your dogs.  There are certain foods, plants, decorations and other winter hazards out there and we all need a reminder every now and then.

Foods

Do not feed your pet any of the foods listed below. They could cause major health problems for your pet so be sure to keep all these items out of reach from them!

  • Chocolate (all kinds)
  • Alcoholic beverages and coffee (grounds, beans)
  • Moldy, spoiled or fatty foods
  • Onions, onion powder and yeast dough

Plants

  • If poinsettias are consumed they may cause mild vomiting or nausea.
  • Lilies in flower arrangements can cause kidney failure or death in cats if eaten.
  • Mistletoe ingestion causes gastrointestinal upset and holly ingestion may cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and lethargy.

Hazards around your Christmas Tree

  • Christmas tree water may contain fertilizers, which if ingested can cause stomach upset.  Stagnant tree water can be breeding grounds for bacteria, leading to vomiting, nausea and diarrhea.
  • Watch your pet around electric cords and wires.  If they were chewed, they could electrocute your dog so cover up or hide any electric cords.
  • Tinsel or ribbon can get caught up in the intestines and cause intestinal obstruction. This could be deadly!!!!
  • Glass ornaments can cut the tissues of the gastrointestinal tract if ingested.  Very dangerous!!
  • Potpourri (liquid or dry) is dangerous and poisonous for all pets.

Other Winter Hazards

  • Antifreeze consumption in very small amounts can be lethal.  As little as one teaspoon of antifreeze can be deadly to cats and dogs. Thoroughly clean up any spills and store antifreeze in tightly closed containers and store in secured cabinets that are inaccessible to your pets.  If you think your pet has consumed antifreeze contact your emergency veterinarian office immediately for assistance.
  • Ice melting products can be irritating to skin and mouth.  Signs of ingestion would include excessive drooling, vomiting or even electrolyte imbalances.

ASPCA Poison Control Center

The ASPCA is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435 or visit them online.  http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/

All of us at DoggieNation wish your famlies and pets a safe and happy holiday season!

Sincerely,
Jordana and The DoggieNation Team  (and Lilly & Sophia!)

Losing a pet is always hard

by Administrator 12. October 2011 09:23

Having a dog is one of life's great joys and every pet owner knows how much fun a dog can be.  The obvious downside of having a pet is when they pass away - whether unexpected, of an illness or old age.  It is never easy and is extremely tough to get over.  Whether your pet lives 6 or 16 years (very lucky if you get 16 years with your pet!) it is always hard and the pain of not having them in our daily life is tough.  From personal experience, we know what losing a pet is like.

Well, our story began in November of 2010.  Our Boston Terrier Punky ate something that got caught in her stomach, she needed emergency sugrery and spent 2 weeks at the animal hospital recovering.  She finally came home and we were just so excited to have her back!  Two weeks later she experienced a seizure and we took her back to the same animal hospital.  After further testing the doctors found Punky had a brain tumor and we opted to do radiation to shrink the tumor.  The radiation was given to her for 4 weeks.  She got through the radiation and once again, we thought all would go back to normal.  It did....but only for about a week.  In early February (right before Punky's 10th birthday), she collapsed walking down the hallway.  We went right back to the animal hospital.  After further testing, Punky's red blood count was down to a 13.  In a normal, healthy dog this number should be around 40-45.  She immediately had a blood transfuion and stayed at the animal hospital again.  The doctors ran many tests and could not find what was wrong with her.  She had a 2nd bood transfusion and more tests - this went on for about 2-3 weeks.  Finally on February 25, 2011 our sweet Punky lost her battle.  The experience of almost losing her in November, then January and finally in February was devastating.  Every person we told our story to could not believe all that she/we went through.

A lot of time was spent mourning our precious Punky and not a day goes by that she is not missed.  We know we have done everything possible to help her but also know that it is out of our hands.  There was another plan ahead for Punky and she has crossed the rainbow bridge with all of the other furry friends there, hopefully playing and chasing that tennis ball she loved so much.

As an avid dog lover, I knew we would get another puppy eventually.  We have a 7 year old Boston Terrier Sophia and didn't want her to be lonley.  A few months after Punky was gone, we welcomed Lilly into our family (another Boston Terrier).  She is a bundle of energy and it is nice to laugh again after so much sorrow.  Please remember that when you get a new dog, you are not replacing the one you lost.  You are just "learning to love someone new" - a wise person gave me that advice and it is so true.

Here is a picture of me and my beloved Punky from 2009.  We have a lot of great memories together!  Remember to keep the memories with your pet with you always!
